The best time to visit Rome would be in the spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November), when the weather is warm, more pleasant, and you can often find reduced prices for flights, hotels and tours. July and August are the most popular and busiest time of the year, but at this time the weather tends to be very hot with no respite and quite unpleasant, especially as a visitor. If you visit during the high season, expect big crowds and waiting in long queues at many attractions.
Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) or Rome Fiumicino Airport is located in Fiumicino, 35.0 km (21.7 mi) west of Rome’s historic city centre.
Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport (CIA) or simply Rome Ciampino Airport, situated 12.0 km (7.5 mi) south southeast of central Rome
The Leonardo Express is the direct train that serves the route between the airport and the centre of Rome. Leonardo Express is a non-stop service to/from Rome Termini railway station with a journey time of 32 minutes. Termini is Rome’s central station where you can take the Metro A and Metro B lines and many buses going all over the city. A one way ticket is €14 per person. You can also take the metropolitan train FM1 that links the airport of Rome with the regions Roma Tiburtina, Fara Sabina, Poggio Mirteto and Orte. Trains depart every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays. A one-way ticket costs €8. The distinctive white taxi cabs await at the Terminal 1, 2 and 3 exits. There are fixed fares from the airport to the city centre. Please note: take only authorized taxis. They are white with a “TAXI” sign on the roof and a licence number on the doors, on the back and inside the vehicle.
There’s no train station at Ciampino airport. The nearest train station is in the town of Ciampino, connected to the airport by COTRAL/SCHIAFFINI buses every 30 minutes. The journey time is, on average, 5 minutes. The cost of the ticket, for sale both on board and from the ground staff is 1 euro. A light rail service connects the Ciampino railway station to the Termini railway station with an average time of 15 minutes. The cost of a ticket is €2 which you can buy at the train station from the ticket machines or newspaper kiosks. At Termini you can take the Metro A and Metro B lines and many buses.
The centre of Rome can be reached with a number of buses. A daily connection between the airport and Rome Termini railway station is provided by the following companies: Atral, Cotral, Sit, Terravision, Schiaffini.
Near the Rome Ciampino airport exit there is a taxi service for Rome. There are fixed fares from the airport to the city centre and to Fiumicino Airport. Please note: take only authorized taxis. They are white with a “TAXI” sign on the roof and a licence number on the doors, on the back and inside the vehicle.
Rome has only two Metro lines – Metro A (red) and Metro B (blue) – but there are hundreds of bus lines and trams. All city transport uses the same “Metrebus” tickets (biglietto), that can also be used for commuter-train rides within the Comune di Roma (including the beach at Lido di Ostia but not Fiumicino Airport).
The tickets come in several versions. A single ticket, called BIT, costs €1.50 and gives you 100 minutes during which you can transfer as often as you’d like. A one-day ticket, that is called BIG, costs €6. It’s valid for 1 day of unlimited travel on any means of transport. Note, this ticket is valid until midnight of the day it is stamped. BTI is a 3-day tourist integrated ticket. It costs €16,50 and is valid for 3 consequent days on any public means. CIS is a a 7-day ticket. It’s valid for one week from the time of validation. The price is €24.
Public transportation tickets must be purchased in advance from tabacchis, newsstands, ticket counters in Metro stations or vending machines at metro and major bus or tram stops.
Alternatively, taxis are easily accessible at designated taxi stands, but note that they cannot be hailed, and the city is also quite walkable.
